Gripe is caused by muscle spasms and excess acid produced when air bubbles form in a baby's stomach.  When air bubbles become caught in a baby's stomach, the stomach thinks it is full of food and produces acids that would typically break down the food particles.  These acids are unnecessary and can cause discomfort.  At the same time, because the stomach is full of air bubbles, the muscles cannot relax, resulting in cramps and spasms.  Woodward's Gripe Water, which contains dill oil and sodium hydrogen carbonate, provides quick relief from wind and gripe.  Dill oil warms and relaxes the stomach, releasing trapped air bubbles.  Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate neutralizes acids in the baby's stomach.
